Abstract: The basis for this work are black-and-white photographs of wafers from austriamicrosystems AG. Each of the 4773 x 4773 pixels of such an image is a grayscale value, that is a value between zero (=black) and 255 (=white). Our primary aim is to judge the image contrast by analyzing the grayscale frequencies. Therefore we take a look at the histogram of the grayscale counts. Since these histograms exhibit multi-modal behavior, we use a finite mixture model of normals (or Poissons since we are dealing with counts) to describe the empirical distributions.
The challenge is to develop an automated estimation procedure for all the parameters in the model based on the well-known EM algorithm, and to derive standard errors of these estimators.[hide abstract]
